I fecently completed my first0ever SOLO bikepacking trip, riding the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail from Ashton to Howard City and back--a total of 102 miles over two days/one night. It was a short but powerful journer that marked the culmination of years of personal work and preparation.
I camped for the night at Northwoods, a peaceful Hipcamp spot just outside of Howard City, Mi. My host Laurie, was incredibly welcomoing and kind--her warmth and attention to detail added an extra layer of comfort and safety to the experience.
I did have night time visitor on my last trip to the outhouse, but with calmness and a short walk, it went on its way after a brief stare down as my headlamp shined on its glowing eyes.
This solo trip wasa much more than a physical adventure. It was the result of years of intentional work: exposure therapy for PTSD, countless solo outings to grow my comfort in the woods alone, and many bikepacking trips with my friend Sharon, all helped me build skills in packing, riding a loaded bike through some rough Michigan trails, and dispersed camping.
The most remarkable part? I felt completely at ease--barely outside my comfort zone! That ease was a clear signal that all the groundwork I'd done had paid off. I finished the trip feeling deeply accomplished and proud, with renewed confidence in my ability to adventure alone on my bike.
This milestone is just the beginning. I'm already thinking about my nexty solo bikepacking trip--taking small, deliberate steps to continue RISING REACHING and RECONNECTING through adventure.
